AI inventory forecasting: the data is already in your ERP

A salesperson finds out at the counter that size M is gone, and the customer walks. In the ERP, that item's curve had been accelerating for three weeks: the stockout wasn't a surprise, it was a warning nobody read. That's the pattern behind almost every “unexpected” stockout — the data existed, in the system the business already pays for.
Why the ERP won't say it on its own
An ERP records and reports: how much sold, how much is left. Every number it shows looks backward. Forecasting is a layer on top — time series per item, seasonality, recent sales velocity — that turns that history into a claim about the future: what runs out, when, and how much to restock. The ERP has the raw material; it doesn't have the engine.
You don't need a data scientist on payroll
What you need: read access to the history, a model that retrains with every month of sales, and a confidence threshold that separates signal from noise. The deliverable isn't another dashboard — it's a short list that arrives before the weekly buy: these items run out on these dates, this is worth restocking. A decision, not a report.
How to verify it before trusting it
Backtesting: the model runs against a past you already know. Hide the last few months, let it predict blind, and compare against what actually happened. If it can't get last December right, don't trust it with the next one. Forecasting, like the rest of a serious system, isn't a promise — it's a result you measure before you use it.
Three questions to know if you're ready
Does your ERP store sales by item and date, even if nobody looks at them? How many stockouts did you have last quarter, and what did each one cost in lost sales? Who decides restocking today, and with what information? If the first answer is yes and the other two sting, the project doesn't start from zero: it starts from your data.
